Skin Problems are a something we commonly face here at Main Street Pet Care.  While some skin problems are quick and easy to solve, others can take a great deal of time and patience.  The puppy above, by the way, was treatable.

Many other underlying health problems can show up in the skin, from something as simple as worms to complicated diseases like diabetes or atopy.  It is extremely important to properly diagnose skin problems so that effective treatment can be started as soon as possible.

Often there are secondary skin infections that result from the underlying problem, and these must also be treated before the problem can be resolved.  In many cases, we also give treatments just to stop the itching so that you and your pet get some peace and quiet while we find the diagnosis.

A few of the more common problems that cause itching include atopy, flea allergies, and food allergies.  Other things are diseases like Cushing's Disease, hypothyroidism in dogs, hyperthyroidism in cats, mange, yeast infections, contact dermatitis, and autoimmune diseases.  On occasion, cancer is the underlying cause.
